What is Pilates?
HISTORY - Pilates (originally called Contrology) was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Based on yoga, martial arts, and ancient Greek and Roman physical regimes.
The 6 original principals of Pilates were Concentration, Control, Center, Flow, Precision and Breathing. He believed that mental and physical health were interrelated. Creating the Mind Body connection.
PILATES NOW - We still use much of what Joseph Pilates created originally. Pilates method is a mind and body practice. When done regularly, it can improve flexibility, build strength and develop control and endurance in the body.
It emphasizes alignment, breathing, developing and improving movement, strength, co-ordination, balance, stability and core strength (which includes abdominal, spinal and pelvic muscles working together for greater movement throughout the body).
Pilates, utilizing various apparatus (such as Wunda Chair, Cadillac, Reformer, Towers, and more), Mat work and small apparatus can cater for a variety of fitness levels and capabilities. Exercises and movements can be modified to suit clients requirements and abilities.
